The decomposition rate in compost heaps slows righ The decomposition rate in compost heaps slows right down in winter due to the lack of sun and warmth, however, they still need to be maintained and with good care are ready to speed ahead in spring. 💨
Here are a few tips to keep them working well despite the winter chill. 🥶
✅ Even though it often rains more in winter than at other times of the year, the humidity in your heap can drop and they may become dry.
Check the moisture in your heap and apply water if needed. However, if the rain is causing the heap to be too wet, cover it with a tarp or cardboard to allow it to dry off a little.
✅ Dry soil and a sheltered environment are an invitation for pests such as cockroaches, spiders and ants.
Aerating your heap and keeping it moist makes it less inviting to pests.
✅ Keep a good balance of ingredients going in your heap with regular additions of food scraps, green weeds, newspaper and dry leaves.

Winter is a great time to add bare-rooted shrubs a Winter is a great time to add bare-rooted shrubs and trees to your garden for a burst of growth in spring! 🌱🌲
They are generally cheaper than the same plant in a pot, which means it’s hard to stop at one.
Look around your garden for a space that could do with more flowers or foliage colour. If you’re looking for shade to cool your house next summer, plant a deciduous tree on the northern or western side.
To get your new bare-rooted plant off to a flying start, prepare the soil weeks in advance, so it’s ideal for planting. Good preparation includes removing weeds and adding organic compost and manure and/or Seasol Biochar with Zeolite. It rejuvenates soils, promotes microbial activity and moisture retention.
