Just like us, lawns need regular food to look their best and stay healthy. As well, regular feeding supports new growth and that beautiful green colour. Having a healthy lawn can help keep the house cooler in summer, make it look visually appealing and provide a great outdoor space for family and friends.

Understanding a little about fertilisers and lawns can help you to achieve the best feeding regime. Check out our helpful article Seasol’s Guide to Lawn Fertilisers.

Spring feeding

Spring is the critical season to feed most lawns as they wake from winter dormancy and respond to warmer temperatures. If you only feed your lawn once a year, do it in spring. Following, our spring lawn tips before feeding can help to improve lawns by getting them ready to take on fertilisers and encourage healthy, lush green growth

Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser such as PowerFeed LawnFeed or PowerFeed Buffalo LawnFeed for Buffalo lawns. It is specifically formulated to revitalise soil health, boost lawn growth and prepare it for the stresses of summer. Apply once per season and remember to water it in thoroughly after application.

Supplement these slow-release feeding with liquid with Seasol for Lush Green Lawns or Seasol for Buffalo Lawns, every month during the growing season. These fast-acting fertilisers and soil improvers get to work quickly to improve soil and lawn health. Plus, they contain a wetting agent, which ensures water gets to the lawn’s root system.

Summer feeding

To keep your lawn at its best, continue the feeding regime as per spring over the summer months. Apply PowerFeed LawnFeed or PowerFeed Buffalo LawnFeed three months after applying it in spring. Continue to liquid feed with Seasol for Lush Green Lawns or Seasol for Buffalo Lawns to help build a resilient lawn.

Tip: Do not apply products when the temperature exceeds 25℃ as you may burn the foliage.

Autumn feeding

Feeding in autumn is just as important as the spring feed. If your lawn care regime extends to a feed twice a year, feed in spring and autumn. Use granular PowerFeed LawnFeed and/or Seasol for Lush Green Lawns to help to rejuvenate your lawn after the stresses of summer and make it stronger and better able to cope with the cold and frost of winter.

Winter feeding

If your lawn is dormant in winter (for example a warm season variety such as couch, buffalo, Queensland blue couch or kikuyu), don’t feed it because, as there is little or no growth, the lawn doesn’t need fertiliser and it will be wasted. However, continue to apply Seasol hose-on every month to help the lawn cope with frost and cold weather.

If you have a cool season lawn variety such as perennial rye, bluegrass or fescue that is actively growing, feed at the end of autumn or beginning of winter with Seasol for Lush Green Lawns and/or PowerFeed LawnFeed.
